Jumping in the Colorado Backcountry.

Hey! My name’s Forrest, I’m 15, and with my parents, I get to live on a guest ranch year round in the Colorado Backcountry. During the summer, the mountain is crowded and abuzz. I mostly work, to pay for my hobbies, but in my free time I ride dirtbikes and work on my sleds.

Then during the winter, we are the only ones who live up here, and the last seven miles to the ranch aren’t plowed – we have to ride snowmobiles instead. So for me, riding is not only a passion, but a necessity of life. From here, we can ride from our doorstep to the highcountry. Most times it’s just me and my dad, but our buddies come up and join us, as well as guests from all over the country.

Thank you! it’s pretty cool to be able to share it all with everyone…

Yeah, it’s quite a bit different here then back in California, but i wouldn’t say it’s better or worse…
I will keep the writing up for sure! It’s a gift, and i’ll try to use it best i can.

  5. If anyone wonders if this motor head is also capable of writing POETRY, believe it or not, he is. Check out the page “Forrest’s Poetry” on the site http://highmountainmuse.com – I think the kid can write, not just ride.

Hi Forrest! I have enjoyed learning of your passion for riding, both winter and summer! You remind me of my son Josh (not sure if you met him last summer or not). Ever since he was very small, (he is now 25!) he loved to be on about anything that moved, and if it has a motor – even better. He was riding a bicycle (without training wheels) by the time he was 3, and moved up from there! He now rides a YZ 426. The last couple of years we have not been able to bring “the bikes” out with us, and both Josh and my husband Jim have really missed that. They love riding in that area. Actually all four of us have had bikes up there – good memories from that trip, although our cabin neighbors may not have enjoyed it all that much! Like you, Josh and Jim are also skilled snowmobilers (is that a word?!) We live in the Cascade Mountains in Oregon, so we get a lot of snow too, but don’t get to walk out our door to ride like you do! Jim was involved in our counties Search & Rescue and did winter snowmobile patrol as well (he is a Sheriff’s Deputy) which he loved. Lots of crazy stuff involved with that. I don’t see a helmet in your picture above, but I am sure you wear one, RIGHT???!!! Have fun and be safe! Valerie Whitcomb

Thanks for writing, Valerie! It’s great to have the opportunity to share.
I do remember Josh, but i didn’t know he was a fellow motorhead! “Snowmobilers” is definitely a a word, at least in this part of the woods! It sounds like the search and rescue was a cool experience… Riding in Oregon is probably quite a bit different from the riding here…
No, don’t worry, i always wear my helmet when riding, as well as my protective vest, knuckle gloves, good goggles, etc…
